Let’s Recycle All That Plastic Floating In Our Oceans

Perhaps, you’ve heard of the Pacific Gyre? This is an area in the Pacific Ocean that goes around and around it due to the normal oceanic flows and it is filled with garbage and plastics. Much of it has come from Asian nations that have inadvertently or sometimes purposely allowed trash and pollution to flow from their shores. Many ships also dump their garbage in the ocean while they are cruising around. Since human trash is now made much of plastic containers, this plastic degrades and pollutes.

Some of that actually looks like the food that fish normally eat, therefore they ingest it. This causes terrible problems for these fish species, and up the food chain as you might imagine. This is a pathetic and disgusting human event taking place. This sort of pollution needs to stop, and we need a solution to pick up all of that trash that is now in the ocean. Unfortunately as it combines with sea life it’s hard to pick it up without also killing the sea life. As it degrades further it is difficult to separate. However there may be a potential solution for this and if you have a few moments I’d like to discuss it.

An article titled; “Sea Chair Project harvests plastic from the oceans to create furniture,” by Eric Mack appeared in Gizmag Online Tech News on August 20, 2012 which had a device that took on ocean water and filtered out the plastics floating in it for recycling to make plastic furniture. Now that has applications my friends, so let’s discuss this some more shall we?

Smart Idea, now it’s time to scale up. Build one of these on an old aircraft carrier or giant old oil tanker and make it a factory to produce stuff, cleaning the Pacific Ocean as you go. Even though this invention is quite small, we could build one the size of an aircraft hangar, which could filter through the water at a fairly high rate of speed, and the system could entail a giant boom which floated over the ocean waves with a dragnet system below pulling up all the debris into the processing unit.

Perhaps a secondary ship could follow along and as the production continued and new items were made of all these plastic particles and material, it could be offloaded onto the second ship loaded in containers and then head for port. Once it got to land it could be rinsed with decontamination fluids, and coated to remove any bacteria. It would be much like mining the ocean for plastic, and it would be all about recycling.
